Boeing 747 marks 40 years of flight

Almost missed this one: Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the very first flight of the Boeing 747. The world's first 'jumbo jet' first took to the skies on February 9, 1969, at Paine Field, near Everett, Washington.

Writing about the historic event in his blog, Randy Tinseth, Boeing's current marketing vice president for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said:
February 9, 1969 was cold, cloudy, and windy. In other words, a typical winter’s day in this neck of the woods. But it was also a day that changed everything.

A little before lunchtime on that date, the first 747 took flight. This 747-100, dubbed the “City of Everett” would spend the next 75 minutes flying over the Puget Sound region.
Randy's Journal has more photos of the first Boeing 747, as well as the crew for the aircraft's first flight: Pilot Jack Waddell, Co-Pilot Brien Wygle and Flight Engineer Jess Wallick.

These days, the “City of Everett” is on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

The Business Jet Fracas: One man's luxury is another's livelihood

Gulfstream G550Just about two years ago, I was preparing a paper for a conference in England. The conference was about women who work in the transportation industry, and my presentation was to be about women who work as flight attendants on large cabin long-range business jets.

As I was preparing the first draft of what would become my presentation, I had a chat with some corporate flight attendants I had come to know well. I told them about the conference and asked them what issues about their jobs they thought I should raise. The immediate and spontaneous reply was, "First, tell them that we exist!!"

We laughed, but I knew exactly what they meant. At that time, most people were only vaguely aware that there was such a thing as a corporate jet, and they knew virtually nothing of the people who work in that sector of the aviation industry.

Then came the current economic crisis, and the media spectacle of corporate CEOs arriving in Washington in sleek business jets to ask the U.S. Congress for a financial bailout. Suddenly corporate aviation was thrust into the media spotlight, and -- rightly or wrongly -- business jets became emblematic of corporate greed and excess in the eyes of the general public.

Now, thanks to the recent media circus surrounding corporate jets, people certainly do know that many companies own and operate business aircraft. I would contend, however, that they still do not understand much about business aviation, and -- more to the point -- it is also painfully apparent that the mainstream media and the public at large still do not appreciate the fact that the people whose job it is to operate and maintain those aircraft even exist!

My concern is that, in the midst of all of the brouhaha about whether or not corporate executives should be flying around in private jets, the jobs of the people who work on those aircraft, maintain them, and supply them, are at risk. Every time a corporate aviation department is downsized or eliminated, dozens and dozens of livelihoods are compromised or eliminated as well.

When I think of recent and potential job losses in the business aviation sector, pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and technicians come first to mind, yet the scope of the debacle actually is much broader. I think of the schedulers, the dispatchers and flight followers. I think of the people who work at the many airports that cater to general aviation, and those employed at FBOs. I think of those who provide services related to business aviation: the fuelers, the marshallers, the cleaners, the caterers. The livelihoods of all these people are at risk.

As orders for business aircraft are canceled or deferred, there will be more layoffs among the manufacturers and dealers of those planes. Employees of companies that make components for business aircraft -- from avionics, to navigational instruments, to interiors -- will lose their jobs as well. Likewise, companies that specialize in training business aviation crews and technical personnel -- an industry within an industry -- will suffer as they lose contracts.

In short, government officials, the mainstream media, and the public at large need to be made to understand that every time a company eliminates a business aircraft from its fleet, many jobs will be lost. This is true not just for the large cabin jets that have been getting most of the bad press, but also for the smaller, less glamorous aircraft. The jobs that will be lost will not be those of a few elite executives; rather, a lot of of ordinary, hard-working folks -- many of whom already live paycheck to paycheck -- stand to lose their livelihoods.

Those of us who know business aviation from the inside may well be able to recite all of the practical reasons and economic advantages afforded by the use of corporate aircraft, yet our defense of the corporate aviation sector should not focus solely on the business case for having a company plane. Perhaps we need to do a better job of telling the world about the many, many people who work in the industry, the extent to which they contribute to the overall economy, and the devastation that the loss of their jobs will create.

Business aviation still may be a mysterious world to the average person, but the people who work in the industry should not be invisible.

FAA and EASA grant type certification to the Boeing 777 Freighter

Boeing 777FLast week, the new Boeing 777 Freighter received type certification from both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Says Boeing: "The certification formally recognizes that the 777 Freighter has passed the stringent design and testing requirements mandated by FAA and EASA, clearing the airplane for cargo service."

According to Boeing, the 777 Freighter, which is based on the 777-200LR Worldliner (Longer Range) passenger airplane, will provide more capacity than any other twin-engine freighter.

The 777 Freighter made its first flight in July of 2008.

Air France Cargo is set to be the launch customer for the aircraft. Delivery of the first 777 Freighter is expected later this quarter.

Two U.S. airlines recalling furloughed pilots

airlinerThis week, two U.S. carriers -- American Airlines and AirTran Airways -- announced the recall of furloughed pilots.

A spokesperson for American Airlines said additional pilots were needed to fly new planes coming into the fleet, and to replace pilots who retired, including some who opted recently for an early-out.

According to the Allied Pilots Association, the union representing pilots at American Airlines:
This week, AMR management announced the creation of a second pilot recall class for the month of March. An initial recall group of 39 pilots will begin Feb. 11 and will now be followed by a group of 10 pilots on March 4 and another group of seven pilots on March 18. An additional 15 pilots have been recalled, but will be placed on military leave of absence.
AirTran Airways, which furloughed 169 pilots this past summer, already has recalled 120 of those, and is sending out letters to recall the remaining 49 furloughees. An article about the AirTran pilot recall in the Atlanta Business Chronicle quoted an airline spokesman who said the pilots are needed for summer and to replace retiring pilots.

Contract negotiations between the AirTran and its pilots' union are also due to resume shortly. The talks had been suspended for several months. The pilots are seeking improvements to job security, work rules, health insurance, benefits and compensation, according to Capt. Mike Best, president of the National Pilots Association, which represents AirTran pilots.

Malev Hungarian Airlines unable to meet payroll

Malév Hungarian AirlinesMalév Hungarian Airlines told employees today that they were unable to pay them the full amount owed them for January wages. Instead, news reports say, employees were paid the equivalent of about $200 today, with the balance promised later in the month.

In a statement to the press, the airline's management blamed its financial difficulties on the global economic crisis and "lower turnover and revenue as a result of the seasonality of air travel during the winter."

Reuters reports, "Malev, which is expected to be taken over by state-owned Russian bank Vnesheconombank (VEB) within weeks, promised to pay some of the late wages within days and the rest following the Feb. 10 extraordinary general meeting, where the new Russian owner is expected to take over, the company said in a statement."

C-47 Turbo Dakota (DC-3) accident at Mojave, CA

DC-3Two pilots escaped with minor injuries after a runway accident at Mojave Air and Space Port (MHV), Mojave, CA. According to the FAA Preliminary Report about the accident, the C-47 Turbo Dakota (DC-3) veered off runway 30 at MHV, and nosed over. The FAA reports that damage to the plane was "substantial." Both crew members were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and later released.

The accident happened on February 4, 2009 at 08:52 local time. Several news reports described the accident as a "failed takeoff."

The accident caused a fuel spill on the runway. TV station KERO in Bakersfield quoted a Kern County Fire Department official who said that first responders "put down a foam blanket" around the aircraft "to prevent ignition."

The 62 year old aircraft was owned by the National Test Pilot School, which is located at Mojave. The aircraft was being used for a training flight.

UPDATE Feb 12, 2009: Aviation news website FlightGlobal.com reported today that the pilots of the accident C-47 "had mistakenly set full right rudder trim on the aircraft during pre-take off actions."

Quoting officials of the National Test Pilot School, which owned the aircraft, FlightGlobal.com says:
N834TP yawed to the right when the pilots, one instructor pilot from NTPS and one Korean Air Force student pilot, rotated once take off speed was achieved.

The Pratt & Whitney PT6-65AR-powered conversion became airborne but departed the side of the runway, settling back to the ground and hitting a sand berm, officials say.

The crash ripped the left gear and left engine from the 62-year-old aircraft, buckled the fuselage and destroyed the nose-mounted forward-looking infra red system turret and belly mounted air-to-ground marine patrol radar, equipment which is normally used to train pilots as well as flight test engineers at four stations in the cabin.
The aircraft is said to be damaged beyond repair.

FAA releases ATC audio related to the US Airways Flight 1549 accident

FAA logoThis morning the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released eight ATC audio recordings related to the ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in New York on January 15, 2009. All of the recordings and related transcripts are available for download from the FAA website:


All of the audio recordings are MP3 files, but be warned that some file sizes are rather large, and since they are unedited, some have a long run time (more than 40 min). The transcripts are PDF files.

Communications between the flight crew of 'Cactus 1549' and ATC are on the New York TRACON audio. Other audio files provide insight into what was going on and being said on the ground at LaGuardia and Teterboro during the emergency.

The Class Bravo Airspace Position audio records conversations between ATC and some helicopter pilots who saw the A320 splash down in the Hudson. They reported its position abeam of the USS Intrepid, and that the aircraft was afloat and rafts were being deployed.

On the Cab Coordinator Position audio, you can hear someone from the Port Authority say, "we got survivors, we got survivors, alright they're picking 'em up," and then, "there are numerous survivors... the plane's still afloat."

As we know now, all 155 souls on board US Airways Flight 1549 did indeed survive.

January ATR-42 Accident in Lubbock: NTSB Preliminary Report

ATR-42The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued a preliminary report on the January 27, 2009 accident involving an ATR-42 aircraft at Lubbock, Texas. The accident happened as the aircraft, owned by FedEx and operated by Empire Airlines, was arriving at Lubbock's Preston Smith International Airport (LBB) from Fort Worth-Alliance Airport. The aircraft was destroyed, and the two pilots on board were injured.

The cargo aircraft (registration N902FX), operating as Empire Airlines flight 8284, landed short of the runway threshold while executing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to runway 17R at LBB. Night instrument meteorological conditions prevailed.

Here is the sequence of events, according to the NTSB Preliminary Report:
A preliminary review of air traffic control communications revealed that the captain contacted the Lubbock Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) at 0422, and reported that they were descending from an altitude of 10,000 feet down to 8,000 feet mean sea level (msl). A controller acknowledged the transmission and then provided the airport's current weather information and a runway breaking-action advisory. In addition, he provided vectors for the ILS 17R approach.

At 0430, the controller instructed the airplane to descend and maintain an altitude of 5,000 feet msl. At 0432, the controller informed the flight crew that the wind had shifted 180 degrees from the north to the south between 5,000 and 6,000 feet msl. The captain responded and added that he also noted a drop in the outside air temperature of 8 degrees and concurred with the controller's observation regarding the wind shift. The controller cleared the airplane for the ILS approach at 0433 and instructed the flight crew to contact Lubbock Control Tower. The captain acknowledged.

At 0434, the captain contacted the control tower and a controller cleared the airplane to land on runway 17R. The captain acknowledged the landing clearance and there were no further communications. Approximately three minutes later an airport maintenance employee contacted the tower and asked "what is that fire there at the end of the runway?" A controller responded, "it's an airplane." The controller had witnessed the accident and had activated the alarm for the airport rescue and fire fighting equipment to respond.

An on-scene examination of the wreckage revealed that the airplane landed short of the runway threshold and collided with the approach lighting system before it skidded off the right side of the runway into the grass. The airplane came to rest on a westerly heading perpendicular to the runway. A post-impact fire consumed a large portion of the fuselage and the right wing.

At 0415, the special weather report at LBB included wind from 350 degrees at 10 knots, visibility 2 miles, light freezing drizzle, mist, ceiling 500 feet overcast, temperature 46 degrees Fahrenheit, dew point 48 degrees Fahrenheit, and a barometric pressure setting of 30.02 inches of Mercury. Earlier media reports said that the crew members had 'walked away' from the crash scene. Today's NTSB report noted, however, that both pilots were indeed injured. The captain's injuries were said to be serious, and the first officer sustained minor injuries. I wish them both a speedy and complete recovery.
