Yikes! Airbus A380 hard landing at Oshkosh

The folks at AVweb.com produced this video of the arrival of the Airbus A380 at Oshkosh for the 2009 AirVenture event. The video was shot earlier today as the A380 crabbed its way onto the runway at Oshkosh. AVweb explains:
The Airbus A380, the world's largest airliner, made quite a dramatic arrival at Oshkosh on Tuesday. Dan Gryder, a Boeing 777 pilot, analyzes what went wrong.
The video includes a slow motion replay of the landing.

  1. Sounds much more like envy to me.

    I see a nice setup "stable approach" followed by touchdown and re-alignment of heading with runway. A very common technique for large aircraft that you may not wish to slip either side or straight.

    Sounds much more likely the B-777 fellow is probably an F/O.

  4. I watched this video over and over With that degree of x wind I see a hard but well executed landing for a heavy. Not the "disaster" as touted by the commentators. He should have spoke about other similar landings on that day. Also he had to make the only available turn off for that size craft to avoid a tow, so he was right on the money.

  5. A tough landing - I reckon he probably should have given himself a slightly longer final to get a better feel for the wind given the need to nail it with his runway restrictions. A go around might have dinted the pride but been appropriate. A tough landing to nail after flying straight over from europe and doing a display routine first! And everything looks bigger with one of those - that wing flapping is pretty pronounced. cheers from brisbane, Oz - John

  6. As a passenger, such a landing would scare me. Given the cross wind and the limitations of the the airport, I do not question the performance of the flight crew. They would not be in that cockpit unless they were among the very best. What I do question is their decision to land. I would hope that the airline companies that operate this aircraft have set proper limits now it is in general service.
